The first Fluxetype letters were cut out of paper—taken apart, then reassembled by hand. Moving and shifting the pieces, Nikita Kanarev kept running into the same questions: thicken a stroke and the letter's proportions shift with it; widen a counter and the contrast reads differently. The parameters wouldn't stay still independently — each one dragged the others along.

That was the problem worth solving. The three axes are the answer: weight, contrast, and x-height—the three forces that kept colliding on the table, now pulled apart so each can move without disturbing the other two.
